How we got here

Our Story

How it began

A Thanksgiving I'll never forget. Classic Jon — he invited over any friends with nowhere to go, the lone soldiers in Florida that year. That paella dinner is what piqued my interest in Jon's cooking. Chip and Charleigh were sold too; they got plenty of scraps off the grill that night.

The proposal

Jon proposed at our home in Florida, just the two of us and of course Chip and Charleigh. He recruited my sister — the real mastermind behind the logistics — my bridesmaid Sam, and every extra pair of hands he could get, to fill our porch with flowers and white drapery, showing off Jon's romantic side. I of course knew he was proposing, because I'm the keeper of our calendar and it was not only my one free weekend in that stretch, my brother and dad had decided to crash at my house for a week. It was a weekend full of family and friends and getting to celebrate our love.

And now, the lake

I grew up coming to Governors Island — my grandparents have lived here for thirty years. The lake has always been my home away from home, and I knew I wanted to get married here from the time I turned six. All I had to do was find the guy. Once Jon and I met, I couldn't wait to bring him to the lake, and he fit right in on the island. So much so that our friends joke we need to extract Jon at the end of every summer. We can't wait to share this special place with you all.

Welcome Drinks

The Root family would like to invite you to kick the weekend off on the water. A sunset cruise around Meredith Bay aboard The Belle of Winnipesaukee — cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, and music while the sky over the lake goes pink. We return to the dock at 7:30 for any late arrivals to join the party!

Pickleball

Courts are open before the day gets going, and everyone is welcome — play, or come watch with a coffee. Drive yourself out to the island for this one: the shuttles don't start until the afternoon. Paddles are provided — just bring yourself.

The Wedding

Ceremony on Governors Island. Reception to follow at the same site — cocktails, dinner, and dancing the night away! Shuttles will take you to and from this event.

Good to know

We'll have flooring down, but the day is mostly outdoors — block heels travel better than stilettos. Parking at the club is very limited, so please ride the shuttle; it brings you home again at the end of the night.

    Buses pick up on the Mill Falls property at 281 Daniel Webster Hwy — a short walk from the Chase House, Church Landing and the Palmer House.

    Shuttles drop you at the door, about twenty minutes from Meredith.

Getting there & staying

Travel & Accommodations

By Air

Manchester (MHT) is closest at about an hour. Boston Logan (BOS) is an hour and a half and usually has the most flights. Portland, Maine (PWM) is an hour and forty-five.

By Car

500 Edgewater Dr, Gilford. The bridge at Summit Avenue is the only road onto the island. Please don't drive to the wedding itself — parking is limited, so take the shuttle. Saturday-morning pickleball is the exception.

Where to Stay

Our block is at Mill Falls at the Lake, Meredith — the Chase House, Church Landing and the Palmer House. $259–$559 a night plus a $38 resort fee, two-night minimum. Ask for the Furbay + Root Room Block. Rooms are released on August 24, 2027.

Getting Around

Saturday shuttles leave Mill Falls at 3:10 PM, boarding from 3:00, and arrive at 3:30. Returns leave the island at 9:00 and 10:15 PM. Friday's boat goes from the Meredith Town Docks, a short walk from the inns.

Governors Island

Governors Island sits out in Lake Winnipesaukee, off Gilford, and is reached by a bridge at Summit Avenue. Shuttles handle the drive, so this is mostly so you know where you are.

Getting on

Summit Avenue bridges onto the island — the only road on. Shuttles run it for every main event.

The Club

From Meredith

About 20 minutes, 7.4 miles: US-3 south, then Endicott St E onto Summit Ave and over to Edgewater Dr.
